Water leaking now? See how to turn it offWater leaking? Turn off the stop tap
The stop tap shuts off the mains water to the house. Closing it is the quickest way to slow a leak while you wait for a plumber.
Find it. It is usually under the kitchen sink, where the pipe comes up through the floor. If not, look under the stairs, in a downstairs toilet, the garage or an airing cupboard.
Turn it off. Turn the handle clockwise until it stops. If it has a lever, turn the lever so it sits across the pipe. Never force a stiff one with a wrench: old stop taps can break.
Drain the pipes. Run the cold taps in the bath and basins to empty the water still in the pipes.
Keep clear of electrics. If water is near lights, sockets or the fuse box, stay away from them. Only switch off at the fuse box if you can reach it without touching water.
Then call or text 07908 152530, with a photo of the leak if you can.
